UFC betting handicappers are still somewhat skeptical about Edgar’s ability despite the fact that he is the defending champion of the lightweight title with 5 consecutive payouts entering action with the UFC 125 odds.

Edgar opened at Sports-Gambling as a +110 dog for this title bout despite being the champ while Maynard opened as a -140 favorite.

Edgar has a career record of 13 wins and 1 loss.  Edgar is a finesse fighter as 8 of his wins were by decision, 3 by submission, and just 2 by knockout.  His 1 loss was also by decision.  Edgar is coming off back to back UFC gambling wins over BJ Penn.

He won the lightweight title over Penn at UFC 112 on April 10 of 2010 in a controversial unanimous decision that immediately set up the need for a rematch which Edgar won on August 28, 2010 at UFC118.   Edgar’s first win over Penn earned him an ESPN ESPY nomination for the Best Upset of the Year.

Although it was a unanimous decision it was also extremely close and Penn felt as if he were the winner.  Edgar is from Toms River, New Jersey and is also known as “The Answer.”  He has 5 years of experience.

Maynard has a record of 10-0 and is also something of a finesse fighter with 8 of his wins by unanimous decision and 2 by knockout.  Maynard is coming off a UFC betting win over Kenny Florian by unanimous decision on August 28 at UFC 118 which was the matchup that set up this challenge against Edgar.

Prior to his win over Florian, Maynard scored a split decision over Nate Diaz on January 11, 2010 at UFC Fight Night 20.  Maynard is something of a hometown hero as he fights out of Las Vegas and has the nickname of “The Bully.”

An interesting angle in this bout with the UFC 125 lines is that Maynard defeated Edgar on April 2, 2008 at a UFC Fight Night event in a unanimous decision so there is familiarity between the two contestants going for the lightweight championship belt and also partially explains why Maynard opened as the slight favorite.
