UFC 117 odds may favor Silva as the Brazilian has been a dominant force in the Middleweight Division but Sonner is well respected in UFC betting circles as the top challenger.
Anderson “The Spider” Silva has a career record of 27 wins and 4 losses. 16 of his wins have been by knockout, 4 by submission, and 7 by decision.
He won the Middleweight title at UFC 64 Unstoppable on October 14, 2006 over Rich Franklin by a technical knockout-knee and has never lost a fight since with a winning streak of 9 consecutive bouts.
He last fought on April 10, 2010 at UFC112 Invincible and scored a unanimous decision against fellow Brazilian Demian Maia in a title defense bout.
Sonnen has a record of 24-10 with 7 wins by knockout, 3 by submission, and 14 by decision. The American has won 5 out of his last 6 fights including 3 straight. His last bout was on February 6, 2010 at UFC 109 Relentless as he scored a unanimous decision win over Nate Marquardt in the “Fight of the Night.”
Sonnen is 33 years old and hails from West Linn, Oregon. He was a NCAA Division I wrestler for the University or Oregon and was a two-time national champion in Greco Roman. He once considered a run in politics as a Republican for the State House of Representatives but dropped out. He also works in the real estate industry.
Sonnen once fought in World Extreme Cage fighting and made it all the way to the Middleweight Championship Fight where he lost to Paulo Filho by submission at the 4:55 mark of the second round. He moved over to UFC after the WEC folded. He has been active in mixed martial arts since 2002.
He will enter his UFC gambling matchup with Silva with plenty of determination as he said that, “I want 12 pounds of gold around my waist.”
Silva fights out of Curitiba, Brazil and is well versed in all aspects of mixed martial arts with expertise in Muay Thai, boxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Tae Kwon Do, Judo, and Capoeira. He has three black belts on his championship resume and is a 10 year veteran of mixed martial arts.
