Sports gambling online bettors recalled that Spain has often been “all hat and no cattle” in previous World Cup gambling appearances and wondered if the same was true for 2010.
Spain had a nice 2-0 win over Honduras to get back on track in group stage action as David Villa came to the rescue with two goals. Villa now has 40 international goals for his career.
Spain can still win Group H with a win over Chile on Friday. Chile currently leads the group standings and is coming off a 1-0 win over Switzerland.
“If we beat Chile we’re practically group winners, so we’re happy,” said Villa. “The good thing is that this result means we depend on ourselves.”
Just as important to Spain and their overall chances of landing in the World Cup Final was the fact that the win over Honduras is also likely to help them avoid an early World Cup gambling match with favored Brazil in the round of 16.
Spanish coach Vicente Del Bosque is still not happy with the way his team is playing.
“We didn’t play a good game,” said Del Bosque. “We had a lot of chances; we should have won by more goals. I’m not especially happy.”
Spain’s loss to Switzerland was just their 2nd out of 28 games under the leadership of Del Bosque.
Spain is the defending 2008 Euro Champion but has been sloppy so far in World Cup action and Honduras had their share of offensive opportunities against the less than focused Spanish defense.
Del Bosque will be demanding a perfect game against Chile.
“We certainly paved the way for the third group match against Chile, but this hasn’t been a great match, we had glorious opportunities,” said the coach.
Del Bosque also stated that Spain needs to improve its finishing touch that it lacked against both Switzerland and Honduras.
Spain entered the World Cup as one of the top tier favorites with Brazil based on their European success. They are a squad that is loaded with talent and seemingly peaking at just the right time as a group. They must now overcome their bad history of failures on the World Cup stage.
