Sports gambling online expectations were quite low for the Aussies and they have done little to change those World Cup gambling expectations and face long odds to graduate from the group stage.
Australia was blown out in their Group D opener against Germany 0-4 as they proved to be completely outclassed by one of the favorites to make the final. The Aussies then pulled themselves together to earn a 1-1 tie with Ghana.
They will conclude Group D action on Wednesday against Serbia and will need not only to win but to win big with plenty of goals.
The draw with Ghana was encouraging as Australia had to play with a 10 man team due to penalties. Ghana is the top ranked African team in the World Cup tournament.
“We have to go for it, we have to win this game, there is no alternative,” said Australian coach Pim Verbeek. “Germany is history, Ghana is history. All we have to do is beat Serbia with at least a four goal difference, so let’s focus on that.
Top Australia players Tim Cahill and Harry Kewell have been dismissed thus far from competition. Facing such steep World Cup gambling odds has not scared off the Aussies, however, as midfielder Brett Emerton said the team will be ready for what is expected to be a physical matchup with Serbia.
“If we can play a game with 11 men, we will probably feel like we’re running on air,” said Emerton. “I think physically the team’s in very good shape.”
Having had to play their World Cup games shorthanded due to the red cards has certainly made life more difficult for the “Socceroos” but it hasn’t killed off their determination.
Australia can also advance with a win over Serbia and a Ghana upset over Germany.
In a World Cup that has already had plenty of officiating controversy; the red cards have been a nightmare for Australia, especially against powerful Germany.
Verbeek decided to go with a younger roster for this World Cup and their have been growing pains along the way but he and the squad are proud of their persistent effort and refusal to bow down in the face of adversity.
