Sports Gambling - College Hoops Name Brand Failures

Sports gambling in the early stages of the 2009-10 college basketball season once again served as a lesson in value as big name teams gushed red ink.

Sports gambling on the North Carolina Tar Heels might sound like a great sports gambling online idea but the problem is that everyone else agrees with that thought. Since North Carolina is one of the most popular college basketball teams in sports gambling they draw a lot of ignorant money from casual gamblers that don’t follow the sport closely.

This transforms North Carolina into one of the biggest sports gambling online overlays of any sport on the board.  While North Carolina began the online sports gambling season 5-1 straight up they were just 1-3 against the spread.

The Connecticut Huskies were another sports gambling example of an iconic college basketball name that brought little in value to their backers.  Connecticut began the sports gambling season 4-1 straight up but was just 1-4 against the spread.

Michigan State is the biggest sports gambling name in the Big Ten for college basketball and yet Tom Rizzo’s team could only get the money in 2 out of their first 5 games of the season.  Few teams could match the preseason college basketball sports gambling hype of the Kentucky Wildcats as they signed new head coach John Calipari.

Talk of a national championship was immediate even before the ink was dry on the contract.  Kentucky opened the sports gambling season a perfect 6-0 straight up and yet was just 2-3 against the spread.

Few names in the Big East bring more sports gambling respect than the Pitt Panthers and yet Pitt covered the spread in just 1 out of their first 6 games of the season.  What all of this illustrates is that big names often lead to big prices in college basketball wagering that have little resemblance to reality or where the true merits of the line should be.

A handicapper should be careful with name brand teams, especially early on before conference play; as such teams often carry a heavy price tag.
