Online Sports Gambling - Spain Looks to Recover from Shock

Online sports gambling handicappers were totally stunned at Spain’s World Cup football betting group stage opener in which they were upset in a 0-1 loss to Switzerland.

Online sports gambling experts had Spain as a prohibitive World Cup football betting favorite both against the Swiss and in the tournament overall.

Spain must now regroup and beat Honduras on Monday in order to stay alive.  It has been a stunning development for the defending European champions.  Fernando Torres and Cesc Fabregas failed to make the lineup against the Swiss and that has caused an uproar.

Spain went with a possession based strategy rather than going with a more aggressive attack based plan and it backfired with a disaster of a result.

With the loss to Switzerland, an aura of panic has set into the Spanish camp as coach Vicente del Bosque is considering lineup changes.

The coach of the 2008 European Champion Spanish team was highly critical of del Bosque for not having Torres and Fabregas in the lineup as they are considered to be two of the best players in the world.  Instead del Bosque went with more defensive oriented players Xabi Alonso and Cesc Fabregas.

Alonso said that he expected Spain to continue with a possession based strategy form their group stage matches.

“Nothing’s decided yet,” said Alonso.  “It’s hard to evaluate, especially since the system worked well in the warm-up games coming in.  The coach makes the decisions, and whatever he decides, the players back him one hundred percent.”

Fabregas is hoping to see more action in the upcoming games.

“I’m not getting the minutes that I would like, but it’s not affecting my work habits,” said Fabregas.

Defender Gerard Pique said that Fabregas could be the spark that Spain needs to advance beyond the group stage.

“A lot of touch, the ability to get into the area and goals,” said Pique.  “If the coach opts for him, he’ll help us very much.”

Torres has had knee injury issues that have hampered his ability to play at one hundred percent.

Pique said that Spanish morale remains high despite the opening game loss and that the tactics that they are using are proper as they will cut down on mistakes.

Chile and Switzerland took the lead of Spain’s group with three points each while Spain and Honduras were at zero.
