Online sports gambling upsets included the mighty team from Germany going down to a 0-1 World Cup football betting loss to Serbia which rekindled concerns about their abilities.
Germany may be a traditional power on the FIFA World Cup stage but there have been concerns raised about their ability this year due to a significant amount of key injuries as well as the relative inexperience of the team.
Germany had to play shorthanded as Miroslav Klose was sent off the pitch for rough play. One minute later Serbia’s Milan Jovanovic scored the only goal of the match at the 38 minute mark. It was the first ever win for Serbia in FIFA World Cup action as an independent nation.
Klose was not pleased about call, which was a critical factor in the German’s loss as he is a key scorer on the team. Klose had a goal in the opener against Australia.
“Football is a contact sport and one factor should be whether there was malice and intention,” said Klose. “I thought I want after the ball.”
The game featured 9 yellow cards handed out by Spanish referee Alberto Undiano, the most of any game in the tournament this far.
German coach Joachim Loew felt that the game was called to tight.
“This was not necessary,” said the coach. “There were many yellow cards that could have been avoided, that were not malicious.”
Germany suffered their first loss in group stage action since all the way back in 1986 against Demark. They still made the final game that year anyway.
German captain Philip Lahm vowed that they will bounce back with a win on Wednesday over Ghana to clinch a spot in the round of 16.
“I think we as players have to look forward, not back, we need to resume where we finished off in the second half,” said Lahm. “Our passes must be better and the reason I am not worried is because the team has shown in the past they can bounce back from this. Despite the defeat, we played imaginatively against Serbia and we can raise our game against Ghana.”
