Online sports gambling success is not expected any time soon for the Pirates who have been the worst sports gambling commodity in the National League for most of those 20 years. Last year Pittsburgh had an online sports gambling record of 62-99 and was one of the biggest money losers on the gambling in sports board.
Pittsburgh went over the online sports gambling total in just 70 games last year. The Pirates ranked near the bottom of the major leagues at 29th in run production and 25th in staff earned run average.
They were a dreadful 22-58 on the road last year and finished dead last in the National League Central Division 12 games behind the 5th place Houston Astros. Left hander Zach Duke leads on the Pittsburgh starting rotation. Last year he had a record of 11-16 but a solid 4.06 earned run average as he was a victim of a lack of run support.
This will be Duke’s sixth online sports gambling season in the rotation for Pittsburgh. Right hander Ross Ohlendorf is the number two starter and had a solid online sports gambling performance in 2009 with a record of 11-10 and a 3.92 earned run average.
Number three starter Paul Maholm has shown potential as a solid online sports gambling value. Last year he went 8-9 with a 4.44 earned run average and had a 3.71 earned run average in 2008 to demonstrate the ability for consistency. Octavio Dotel arrives from the Chicago White Sox and is expected to be the Pirates closer this year.
Dotel was last a regular closer in 2004 for the Oakland Athletics and has been a set up man for most of his career. He has a 3.73 lifetime earned run average and 83 career saves in 122 opportunities. Right fielder Garrett Jones was the top home run hitter on the Pirates last year with 21 as he hit .293.
The Pirates lack of depth and marquee players will likely doom them to another last place finish in 2010.
