The better teams usually win but there is oftentimes no value in betting them and that is where hockey matchups come into play. You can still look at the basics in NHL matchups like goals for, goals against, home and away statistics, and head to head matchups but some things have changed with no ties involved.

It is not as advantageous to take underdogs in hockey matchups because you don’t get much value. If a game goes to a shootout the better team usually wins. That has taken away some of the value with dogs in NHL matchups. There also used to be a time when you could bet favorites in NHL matchups at a reasonable price.

That is no longer the case as routinely you see -200 or more favorites in hockey matchups. It has gotten to the point where seeing a -300 or more favorite is not that out of line in NHL matchups. It is similar to what has happened in baseball betting.

As you look at NHL matchups you may want to consider some of the baseball techniques and strategies that are used. You may want to look at things like travel, streaks, etc. There is no doubt that taking the underdog is a bit more risky in today’s NHL. That does not mean underdogs won’t win at times, but they are not the value bet they used to be.

You may want to look more at totals as well with NHL matchups. The NHL is definitely more scoring friendly and that has led to raised totals and to more scoring. Betting totals in hockey is definitely an area you want to consider as you look at NHL matchups. As you consider hockey betting be sure and make adjustments.

The days of making money at hockey betting without effort are over. You must do research and really pick your spots if betting sides. If you are betting totals you may have more success and you probably want to look strongly at betting overs in NHL matchups.
