Hockey betting odds handicappers are always leery of the San Jose Sharks as they have had a tradition of falling short in the playoffs after being a dominant commodity in the NHL gambling regular season.

The Detroit Red Wings will host the San Jose Sharks in game 3 of their best of seven Western Conference semifinal series with a starting time of 8PM ET and a telecast on Versus.  Be sure to open your Sports Gambling account for side and total odds on this matchup.

Detroit’s goaltending and defensive issues have been a concern over the past couple of seasons but their lack of offense in the first game of this series adds to the worries of their fans and handicappers.

San Jose scored a pair of 2-1 home wins to begin this series with a 2-0 lead in games.  The Sharks have the major asset of goaltender Antti Niemi who was the Stanley Cup winning goaltender for the Chicago Blackhawks last year and as a result will have the poise and confidence to deal with the pressure of the NHL playoffs.

Detroit entered the post season with a questionable defense that ranked 23rd in the NHL for goals against and the losses in San Jose were especially painful as they got solid goaltending from Jimmy Howard that went to waste.  Howard has a 2.30 goals against average for the playoffs so far but the Wings are yet to have a goal scorer bust out and emerge as a leader.

Niemi has a 3.06 goals against average as he had a rough opening series for the Sharks but has since resumed his status as a key NHL betting asset so far against Detroit.  Ryane Clowe was off to a great start in the playoffs wit4 goals.

The Sharks had beaten Detroit in 9 out of 11 games over the past two seasons as they emerged as the superior defensive team.  Heading into his playoff series San Jose had solid success at Detroit as they beat the hockey betting odds in 4 of their last 5 visits to Joe Louis Arena with the last 4 games in that span going over the total.
