Washington was in the midst of an 8 game losing streak from December 2 through December 18 and fell to third place in the Southeast Division standings as a result of the slump that had their fans and many handicappers up in arms and coach Bruce Boudreau on the hot seat.

Washington saw their record fall to 18-12-2-2 with the hockey odds as they were a strong under team with a mark of 12-22 under the total including a road mark of 3-12 under the number.  The Caps had a road record of 6-8-1 and slumped to 11th in the NHL for scoring offense while ranking 16th for goals against as their goaltending problems from last year’s playoff debacle have not been solved.

Another problem has been the flu bug for left winger Alexander Semin, who was Washington’s leading goal scorer with 18.  Fellow left winger Alexander Ovechkin was the overall leading scorer for the Caps with 12 goals and 25 assists while center Nicklas Backstrom had 11 goals and 23 assists.

The Capitals were suffering from a lack of scoring depth as there has been little help from the rest of the lineup.  Number one goaltender Michal Neuvirth had a 2.69 goals against average while Semyon Varlamov had a 2.54 goals against average.

New Jersey had a NHL wagering record of just 9-21-1-1 as their playoff collapse last year was a portent of things to come.  The Devils ranked 30th in goal scoring and 26th for goals against and scored just 2 hockey betting payouts in 10 games from November 26 through December 18.

Veteran netminder and future hall of famer Martin Brodeur has seen his goals against average soar to 2.84 and leading scorer Patrick Elias had a meager 6 goals and 16 assists.
