Hockey Betting: NY Rangers vs. Pittsburgh Penguins

Hockey betting Sunday includes the big Eastern conference showdown of the Rangers and Penguins in afternoon hockey wagering action.

Hockey betting handicappers are perplexed by the fall of the Pens while the hockey wagering community has not gotten good value from the Broadway Blue Shirts.  The New York Rangers have proven to be an expensive hockey betting commodity with little value.

The Rangers had an overall hockey betting record of a strong 24-15-2-2 straight up but were just 17-26 against the hockey gambling lines.

The Rangers are one of the few hockey wagering teams with a true national/world wide following and they attract a lot of extra hockey betting action as a result, which means that they are often over-valued and a hockey wagering loss on them can be a setback that takes a long time to recover from.

The Rangers hockey betting strength has been their 10th ranked defense.  Their offense ranked just 23rd in the NHL and their power play an even worse 28th.  The Rangers did have the 2nd best penalty killing unit in the league.

From December 20-January 9 the Rangers suffered through a hockey betting slump in which they paid off gamblers in just 2 out of 8 games.  The hockey betting world has become alarmed (as well as broke) over the performance of the Pittsburgh Penguins this season.

Pittsburgh was a strong hockey betting favorite to win the Stanley Cup but they have been in a recent free fall that has shocked gamblers and fans and has their front office and superstar on the hot seat.  Pittsburgh had an overall hockey betting mark of 20-18-1-3 straight up and just 18-24 against the hockey gambling lines.

The Penguins went on a bad hockey betting stretch from December 27 through January 8 in which they got the cash in just 1 out of 7 games.  What is equally disturbing has been the play of Sidney Crosby, who is touted as hockey’s greatest player.  Crosby doesn’t even lead the Penguins, let alone the league, in any offensive category.

The Penguins real problem is their 25th ranked defense, however.  Pittsburgh is now in the position of possibly missing the playoffs if they don’t pull themselves together.
