The Giants were 12-4 both straight up and against the NFL odds as defending world champions last year but they lost 4 of their final 5 NFL betting appearances straight up. Included in that poor finish, was a 2-3 mark against the NFL odds, that ended with a listless NFL betting loss at home against the Philadelphia Eagles in the playoffs as the Giants were upset 11-23 as 4-point chalks.
As strange as it sounds the Giants were looking like a solid bet against the NFL odds to repeat as champions until wide receiver Plaxico Burress shot himself in the leg at a night club. The incident completely changed the tone of the season as the Giants were never the same against the NFL odds.
The Giants were still one of the better balanced teams against the NFL odds as they ranked 7th overall on offense and 5th overall on defense. When handicapping the Giants against the NFL odds the first place to look, of course, is with starting quarterback Eli Manning.
The 6-year pro from Ole Miss has developed into one of the top signal callers in the game. Last year Manning threw for 3238 yards and 21 touchdowns against the NFL odds with just 10 interceptions.
That being said Manning had a poor finish against the NFL odds last year and he was downright awful in the playoff game against the Eagles as he went 15-29 for 169 yards with 0 touchdown passes and 2 interceptions.
The Giants were an outstanding rushing team last year with both Brandon Jacobs and Derrick Ward going over 2000 yards. Ward has since departed for Tampa Bay, however, which will be a significant loss. Jacobs led the Giants in touchdowns with 15.
The top receivers last year were Domenik Hixon and Amani Toomer but neither was a breakaway threat as both finished was averages under 14 yards per catch. The Giants have parted with Burress who is facing a suspension from the NFL.
