Football gambling expectations were met last week by the Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints but that was not the case in the San Francisco 49ers NFL gambling opener.

The 49ers will host the Saints on Monday.  Sports-Gambling opened with the New Orleans Saints as 4.5-point road favorites and with a total of 44.  Kickoff on ESN is at 8:40 PM Eastern.

The San Francisco 49ers suffered an embarrassing loss with the football betting odds last week as they were crushed by the Seattle Seahawks 31-6 as 3-point road favorites as the game was a push on the total of 37.  It was about the worst possible start for a team picked to win the NFC West.

Head coach Mike Singletary held a team meeting on Sunday night at team headquarters after the 49ers got home and spared no criticism of the poor effort.  “I just felt that after the game some of the comments that I made were very hard comments, very honest comments,” said Singletary.

“And I just wanted to make sure that everybody was on the same page and didn’t leave here having conversations in the parking lot and having conversations in the bathroom, not fully understanding what I was saying.”  The coach added that “I feel we’re going to be a very good football team.”

Among the many frustrations was the inability of the 49ers to get the play calls to quarterback Alex Smith in time.

The New Orleans Saints shut down the Minnesota Vikings 14-9 to score a payout with the football betting lines as 4.5-point home favorites as the game went under the total.  Drew Brees passed for 237 yard and a touchdown while the defense looked improved.

New Orleans has covered the spread in 10 out of their last 12 football gambling matchups with San Francisco including 3 straight.  The Saints have covered 5 consecutive road games at San Francisco and their last 6 visits have gone over the total.

New Orleans has gotten the money in just 2 out of their last 6 road games overall with just 1 of those games going over the total.  San Francisco has failed to cover the spread in just 2 out of their last 11 home games and has gone under the total in 4 straight games as a host.
