Football odds opened with the Eagles as 3.5-point favorites with a NFL betting total of 35 as Tom Brady returns as the starting quarterback for New England. Brady will not see a lot of action against the preseason football odds but has publicly expressed his desire to play a full exhibition slate.
He is expected to play a series or two in this NFL betting matchup. Both the Patriots and the Eagles are veteran contenders that have fairly set lineups against the football odds for this year. It is not expected that either team will place a lot of emphasis on winning preseason games against the football odds.
New England had another winning season against the football odds last year despite Brady going down in the first quarter of the first game.
What will make for an interesting preseason for the Patriots against the football odds this summer will be the backup quarterback situation as last year’s backup for Brady, Matt Cassel, was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs after a fine season in which he led the Patriots to a tie for the AFC east division title.
Kevin O’Connell and Andrew Walter are the backups for New England this year against the football odds as the Patriots took a great risk in letting the proven Cassel go. Both O’Connell and Walter will get the majority of snaps this summer against the preseason football odds.
O’Connell is considered the Patriots’ “quarterback of the future”. He was a third round draft pick for New England last year out of San Diego State. Walter was a third round pick of the Oakland Raiders in 2005 out of Arizona State.
In three seasons at Oakland Walter played 15 games and compiled a horrible quarterback rating of 52.6 with 3 touchdown passes and 16 interceptions. He will be the ultimate example of whether or not the New England “system” is bigger than any player.
Philadelphia will give Kevin Kolb a significant amount of snaps at quarterback in preseason. He was a 2nd round pick of the Eagles in 2007.
