March Madness Betting - South Regional Sweet Sixteen

March Madness betting surprises were many in the first two rounds of action as those who bet on March Madness saw St. Mary’s emerge as the Cinderella team of the South.

March Madness betting excitement continues to grow in anticipation of this upcoming weekend’s “Sweet Sixteen” as handicappers preparing to bet on March Madness have great options. St. Mary’s was a 10-seed in the South Regionals and began March Madness betting action with an 80-71 win over Richmond as they covered the betting line as 1-point dogs.

That was then followed up with one of the biggest upsets in the tournament so far as St. Mary’s beat 2-seed Villanova 75-68 as 4-point dogs.  The Gaels “Sweet Sixteen” March Madness betting opponent will be 3-seeded Baylor on March 26.

Baylor beat Sam Houston in the opening round 68-59 as 9.5-point chalks and then scored a second round March Madness betting win and cover over Old Dominion 76-68 as 4-point favorites.

The top seed in the South was Duke and the Blue Devils made the “Sweet Sixteen” after beating Arkansas Pine Bluff 73-44 as 24-point favorites and then followed that up with a 68-53 win over California as 6.5-point chalks.

The Blue Devils look like the Duke of old and will be a steep mountain to climb for their opponent in the “Sweet Sixteen,” which is Purdue.  The Boilermakers are a bit of a surprise in that they were not expected to have much success in the tournament this year.

Purdue limped into the “Big Dance” without the services of their injured top player Robbie Hummel and with a 7-game winless streak against the spread.  But Purdue rallied with a 72-64 win over Siena as 4.5-point chalks and followed that up with a 63-61 overtime win over Texas A&M as 2-point dogs in an overtime thriller.

Notre Dame was a disappointment in the South as they entered the Big Dance with considerable momentum but lost in the opening round to Old Dominion 50-51 as 2.5-point chalks.
