Atlanta is one of the better defensive teams in basketball gambling as they ranked 9th in the NBA for points allowed. The Hawks problem is that they lack a bona fide superstar offensive player in the mode of Chicago’s Derrick Rose.
So far Jamal Crawford and Joe Johnson have led the Hawks on offense in a more balanced attack. Crawford was at 20 points per game while Johnson was averaging 18 points per game in the playoffs after leading Atlanta in the regular season.
As good as Atlanta’s defense was in the NBA this year it was not on the level of Chicago’s. The Bulls ranked 2nd in the NBA for points allowed and ranked with the Boston Celtics as the top defensive team with the NBA lines.
The difference between the Bulls and most of their opponents besides defense is Rose, who was averaging almost 28 points per game in the post season after averaging over 25 PPG in the regular season.
Joakim Noah was another major asset for the Bulls in the playoffs as he had 10.6 rebounds per game while Carlos Boozer also crashed the glass with 10 rebounds per playoff game.
Atlanta must find a consistent scorer that can dominate a game the way that Rose does for Chicago. Atlanta has used the team approach to get this far but at the end of the day they may not be able to take the next step without a dominant go-to man emerging in this series.
While both teams like to emphasize defense the difference in this series could prove to be Rose as he is the one key element that Atlanta lacks with the NBA playoffs odds.
