NBA gambling handicappers have come to respect the Atlanta Hawks as a solid Eastern Conference playoff contender with the NBA gambling odds.

NBA gambling expectations are not as high as last year for the Hawks however as they were unimpressive in their NBA gambling odds loss to Orlando in the playoffs last year.

Atlanta finished the season with 53 wins but was swept by the Magic in the second round of the playoffs after being extended the full seven games by the undermanned Milwaukee Bucks in the opening round.  The playoff failure cost coach Mike Woodson his job as Atlanta assistant Larry Drew will take over as the head man.

Sports-Gambling opened with Atlanta as a +5000 longshot choice to win the NBA title and as a +2500 selection to win the Eastern Conference.  Atlanta had an over/under win total of 46.5.

Among the reasons for the big numbers on Atlanta of course have to do with the new look Miami Heat and their famed “Three Kings” but also because the Hawks seem stagnant and marking time compared to their rivals in the Eastern Conference that are making significant efforts and moves to improve.

Joe Johnson is the cornerstone of the Atlanta franchise and a key NBA betting asset that led the team in scoring with 21.3 points per game last year. Johnson tested the free agent waters but decided to stay home and inked a 6 year deal worth $120 million.

Atlanta chose to spend money on keeping their solid team together rather than going with a makeover or a significant import from another team.  The fickle Atlanta market will want a long run in the playoffs and if that does not look possible there are likely to be plenty of empty seats at Phillips Arena this year.

Drew has been an assistant for 14 years including the last 6 under Woodson as the Hawks felt it was important to maintain as much continuity as possible due to the stability of their roster.

NBA betting online handicappers will be looking for Atlanta to perhaps offer some board value as they will certainly lack the attention of such Eastern Conference rivals Orlando, Boston, and Miami while having a solid nucleus.

Johnson will need to impress Atlanta fans as he had some critical things to say after the Hawks NBA gambling playoff debacle last year.  This is a do or die season in Atlanta.
