All of the Week 1 betting lines are available for you at Sports-Gambling.com Sportsbook. On Sunday, the Carolina Panthers (7-9 in 2007) head to the West coast to take on the San Diego Chargers (11-5 in 2007). Kickoff from Qualcomm Stadium is set for 4:15 PM, and football bettors can view the game regionally on Fox.
Since going to the Super Bowl following the 2003 season, Panthers fans haven’t had much to celebrate. They’ve only made one playoff appearance since, and because of it, HC John Fox is likely on the hot seat this year. Last season, Carolina went just 7-9, largely due to a five-game skid in the middle of their season following their bye week.
NFL betting fans weren’t any happier than the Panthers were in that stretch, as Carolina failed to beat the football betting odds in all five affairs. QB Jake Delhomme didn’t play in any of those games though, and Fox hopes that the return of his starting quarterback will propel the Panthers back to the playoffs in ’08.
All eyes in San Diego are fixed upon LB Shawne Merriman, who will make it a go in his first regular season game with torn ligaments in his knee. If Merriman isn’t 100%, the likelihood that San Diego will advance all the way to the AFC Championship game again this season is slim.
For now though, San Diego is on the longest streak of covering the NFL betting line in the league. The last time the Chargers didn’t cash a winning ticket for their football betting fans was before Thanksgiving. Their ATS winning streak now spans nine games. At Qualcomm Stadium, the Chargers only failed to cover once, a shocking 30-16 loss to the Kansas Chiefs back on September 30th of last year.
For that reason, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that the Chargers have been tabbed 9.5-point home favorites in this intra-conference match-up, with the ‘total’ coming in at 42.
