The Mountaineers come into the game off of a very easy 48-14 win over FBS Villanova in a game where they basically showed nothing for the Pirates to read this week. On the other hand, the Pirates are coming off a sensational 27-22 win over the then #17 Virginia Tech Hokies where the Pirates more than covered the NCAA betting line as nine-point underdogs.
Pat White threw for 208 yards and five touchdowns against the Wildcats in the Mountaineers season opening win last week; numbers he’ll need to try and duplicate again for the Mountaineers to beat the Pirates this week. The Mountaineer defense will have to be better than they were last week though, giving up 399 total yards and 21 points to Villanova.
The Mountaineers will also look to improve on their 4-1 ATS mark off of the closing NCAA odds against non-conference opponents, which was a consistent money maker for college football betting fans the last two seasons. The Pirates participated in what may have been the best game of Week 1 against the Hokies.
They blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown with under two minutes to go to beat Frank Beamer’s squad by a 27-22 final count. The Pirate offense, led by 235 total yards from senior QB Patrick Pinkney, blasted the vaunted Hokie defense for 369 total yards and three touchdowns.
The Pirate defense was spectacular as well, holding the Hokies to 243 total yards, and picking off QB Sean Glennon twice. To pull off outright and pointspread victories per the NCAA lines again this week, the Pirates will need to be solid on both sides of the ball for NCAA betting followers backing them to cash back-to-back tickets.
The college football betting line has the Hokies as eight-point road favorites against the Pirates with a ‘total’ of 50.
