Kickoff between the (0-0) Irish and (0-1) Aztecs is set for 3:30 Eastern from Notre Dame Stadium; NBC will once again carry the National Broadcast. It was a 2007 season to forget as Charlie Weiss and the Irish not only finished 3-9 SU, but also opened the season as losers of five straight.
ND is however, 5-2 ATS in their last seven non-conference games, and college football betting should also take note that a win on Saturday would be the 100th "W" in a season opener in Notre Dame’s storied history.
With a year under his belt, Weiss and the Irish faithful expect a much more productive showing from sophomore gun-slinger, Jimmy Clausen; Clausen also has the likes of sophomore RBs Armando Allen and Robert Hughes (Spring Game MVP) in the backfield, along with last season’s leading rusher, junior, James Aldridge.
As for the NCAA odds favoring the Irish by 20-points... just keep in mind that San Diego State allowed 29 points to D-I FCS Cal Poly last week, a Big West team that collected 483 yards of total offense against the Aztecs.
While it may not have been an epic triumph in the fashion that Appalachian State defeated Michigan, Cal Poly did collect another win for its FCS fellowship last weekend by taking down SDSU, 29-27 at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego. No one’s pointing fingers at the Aztecs; no one’s making fun.
However, as the world of college football betting moves into September, the news for Chuck Long’s squad doesn’t get any better; SDSU is 1-5 ATS this month against the closing NCAA betting line, and 1-6 ATS in their last seven non-conference games.
However, Saturday’s loss did produce one positive, as SDSU’s Freshman QB Ryan Lindley’s final stat-line read: 27-of-45 for 352 yards and 3 TDs; numbers that were high enough to set school records for completions, yards, and touchdowns for a freshman quarterback making his first collegiate start.
Again, Notre Dame opens their season this Saturday as 20-point favorites over San Diego State with the total sitting at 44.
