This year’s race is on Saturday, May 15th and the Preakness Stakes betting field includes the Kentucky Derby winner. Preakness Stakes odds normally favor the Kentucky Derby winner and that will be the case this year as well. Super Saver was very impressive in winning the Kentucky Derby and he seems to be getting better with each race.
Trainer Todd Pletcher has already said that his horse will be in the Preakness Stakes wagering field. “I think his running style suits Pimlico well,” Pletcher said. “I don’t think he’ll have any problem with the tighter track. As a rule, it’s a racetrack that you kind of have to be involved [in the race] early, so I think that suits him.”
It is unlikely that any of Pletcher’s other horses will be on the board for Preakness Stakes odds. Pletcher said that Devil May Care and Mission Impazible are all but sure not to run and Discreetly Mine is unlikely to go in Preakness Stakes odds.
Preakness Stakes odds favor Super Saver and according to jockey Calvin Borel, he should win. “The one thing you’ve got to like about Calvin is his confidence,” Pletcher said. “I don’t think I’ve ever had a jockey come to the paddock more focused. I would equate it to someone coming out for a heavyweight fight. He was so in the zone, so pumped up. He didn’t have much to say, but you could see the intensity on his face.”
One of the challengers to Super Saver in Preakness Stakes odds could be Jackson Bend. The Nick Zito trained horse didn’t do much in the Derby but could come back in the Preakness. Second-place Derby finisher Ice Box may not go in Preakness Stakes wagering.
“I don’t know right now, and I won’t make a decision until next week,” Zito said. “Ice Box trained very, very hard for six weeks, and it’s not necessarily easy to come back in two weeks. I never say never, but coming off a lay-off, it’s a hard thing to do if you just run him right back.”
Regardless of whether or not Ice Box is entered he is going to be a distance second choice in Preakness Stakes odds behind Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver.
