Preakness wagering in recent years has come down to finding horses that were waiting in the weeds to pick off the Kentucky Derby winner with the Preakness odds.
Last year Rachel Alexandra was just such a horse as the filly took Preakness horse racing by storm with a win over Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird. The filly was well rested and did not have the stress of a Derby run to contend with. First Dude now has that same opportunity to come from nowhere and upset the Derby winner.
First Dude brings a record of one win, three places, and one show in six career starts to the Preakness Stakes odds board. He last ran on April 10 in the Grade 1 mile and one eighth Blue Grass Stakes where he finished third behind Stately Victor and Paddy O’ Prado.
It was a strong finish for First Dude has he was bounced at the start but recovered well to finish in the money. He has total career earnings of $152,000.
Prior to the Blue Grass Stakes, First Dude finished out of the money in the Grade 1 Florida Derby on March 20 behind Ice Box and Pleasant Prince, two other Preakness wagering entries for Saturday.
Ramon Dominguez will get the Preakness Stakes betting mount aboard First Dude. He is coming off his eighth consecutive New York Racing Association Meet Championship as he had 27 winners at Aqueduct in the 19 day spring season.
Dominguez led all of New York racing with 367 wins in 2009 and was second nationally in wins with 391 last year. It is a Preakness Stakes wagering resume that offers plenty of potential for value and a big payoff.
Dale Romans is the trainer for First Dude and those who will bet on Preakness Stakes action will like his record of several training titles at Churchill Downs, Keenland, and Turfway Park. This will be Romans first Preakness Stakes run of his career.
