Preakness odds on Papa Clem will be for a horse with a solid Preakness gambling resume and a lot of talent. This horse is a classic beaten favorite. Papa Clem will enter action against the Preakness odds coming off a 4th place finish in the “Run for the Roses”.
Papa Clem started off 7th in the Derby before climbing to 3rd at the three-quarter mile mark. From there, however, he could climb no further and he finished behind Mine That Bird, Pioneer of the Nile, and Musket Man. Still, Papa Clem has more than his share of Preakness gambling assets on the resume.
Papa Clem’s biggest claim to fame entering action against the Preakness odds would be his win at the Arkansas Derby on April 11. He beat out Old Fashioned by a half of a length. Papa Clem enters action against the Preakness odds as a member of one of the legendary families of racing.
He is named for one of the architects of California racing, the late Clement Hirsch. Clement’s son Bo named the horse in honor of him. Clement Hirsch, among many accomplishments, was the founding director of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club. The California circuit named not one but TWO grade one races after Hirsch.
It is one of the great human interest stories leading into the run against the Preakness odds. Papa Clem showed plenty of potential for the Preakness odds in his Arkansas Derby win. He beat out the favored Old Fashioned on a breath taking stretch run before edging him out at the wire.
It was the type of run that inspires confidence against the Preakness odds. Beyond that his Derby run was respectable on the sloppy track and he showed that he can run with any horse entered this year against the Preakness odds.
Prior to the Arkansas Derby Papa Clem finished 2nd in the Louisiana Derby on March 14 as Friesan Fire, another Derby entrant, took the win.
