Kentucky Derby odds have to factor in both good and disappointing performances by General Quarters for the Kentucky Derby gambling board. General Quarters opened at 20/1 on the Kentucky Derby odds list.
He has a career mark of 3 wins, 3 places, and 1 show in 11 starts and enters Kentucky Derby gambling action with total graded earnings of $595,645.
General Quarters substantially improved his standing with Kentucky Derby odds players in his last start when he won the Blue Grass Stakes as he held off a strong charge from Hold Me Back to earn his way into the Kentucky Derby odds rotation.
Prior to that, however, General Quarters concerned many Kentucky Derby odds players when he finished an embarrassing fifth at the Tampa Bay Derby. Before that debacle General Quarters won the Sam F. Davis at Tampa Bay Downs, which followed a second place finish at the Pasco Stakes, which was also at Tampa Bay Downs.
General Quarters has impressive but unlucky pedigree for the Kentucky Derby odds. He was sired by Sky Mesa, grand sired by Pulpit, and his great grand sire was AP Indy, all of whom had their issues in the “Run for the Roses”.
For over fifty years trainer and owner Thomas R McCarthy has been involved in horse racing and he will have his full and undivided attention on General Quarters, who is his only horse posted on the Kentucky Derby odds.
McCarthy was a high school principal in Kentucky before retiring 19 years ago to take up horse racing full time, making him a hometown and sentimental favorite. Jockey Julien won the Eclipse Award as the outstanding apprentice jockey in 2006 as he earned titles at Churchill Downs and Keeneland and broke records at Turfway Park.
He has mounted in the last two years against the Kentucky Derby odds but failed to run in the money. He owns two Breeders’ Cup titles.
