The horse is listed at double-digit odds in Preakness Stakes betting He will not have jockey Calvin Borel who rode him in the Trial as Borel will be on Preakness Stakes wagering favorite Super Saver.
Preakness Stakes odds are normally tilted towards the Derby winner and that is the case again this year with Super Saver. Hurricane Ike is one of the newcomers that will try and upset Super Saver in Preakness Stakes odds and continue the Triple Crown drought.
Hurricane Ike is trained by John Sadler but he will need another jockey as Borel can’t ride him.
Hurricane Ike won the Derby Trial on a sloppy track at Churchill Downs and paid $13.80 as the fourth choice in the field of eight. Borel was the jockey in the Derby Trial and he also rode the horse to a second place finish in the Bay Shore at Aqueduct.
“It maybe took me a race to get to know him,” Borel said. “I loved the horse the first time I rode him. I begged them when they ran him back to let me ride him, to at least give me one more shot.”
Preakness Stakes odds indicate that Hurricane Ike is owned by Ike and Dawn Thrash who had Line of David in the Kentucky Derby. He won his debut in a five-furlong Hollywood Park maiden special weight race last year.
He then ran fourth in the Best Pal Stakes, fifth in the Del Mar Futurity and 11th in the Dixiana Breeders’ Futurity and second by a neck to Macias in the six-furlong Jack Goodman Stakes at Santa Anita. This year he was out of the money in a 6½-furlong allowance race at Santa Anita, second in the Bay Shore and then he won the Derby Trial.
The pedigree for Hurricane Ike in Preakness Stakes odds indicates that he is the son of Graeme Hall who was in the 2000 Kentucky Derby. Graeme Hall has turned into a nice stallion and his runners are doing well.
His first four crops have produced 15 stakes winners, six of them graded and that gives the horse a chance in Preakness Stakes odds. Hurricane Ike’s dam is Parental Uproar. She is the daughter of the Storm Cat stallion Future Storm.
The Derby Trial has become a prep race in Preakness Stakes betting for horses that didn’t make the Kentucky Derby. Hurricane Ike is another one trying that route to win in Preakness Stakes odds.
