Belmont Stakes odds players were hoping for a rematch between Rachel Alexandra and Mine That Bird, which would have been an even Belmont Stakes betting matchup.
Rachel Alexandra would have likely been the favorite on the Belmont Stakes odds after winning the Preakness Stakes by half a length over Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird, who was charging hard down the stretch.
Many Belmont Stakes betting handicappers believe if the mile and sixteenth Preakness Stakes were as long as the mile and a half Belmont Stakes, Mine That Bird would have caught her.
Rachel Alexandra’s owner Jess Jackson knew of the strong public demand for her to post for the Belmont Stakes odds but he felt it was in the best interest of the horse to rest her. Since March 14 the filly has won 4 graded races and Jackson said it was in her best interests to take a vacation from the Belmont Stakes odds.
The horse is in fine shape but Jackson and his group do not want to risk her health with the stress of yet another graded race against the Belmont Stakes odds so soon after her dominating performances in the Kentucky Oaks and the Preakness Stakes. Rachel Alexandra has 5 wins in 5 races this season.
Speculation is that instead of Rachel Alexandra running against the Belmont Stakes odds, she will run in the Mother Goose at Belmont Park on June 27, which is a $300,000 Grade 1 event.
Belmont Park management is disappointed that the filly won’t post for the Belmont Stakes odds as they estimate it could cost them twenty to thirty thousand less fans in attendance.
Last year when Big Brown ran against the Belmont Stakes odds for the Triple Crown, the race drew over 94,000 fans. About half of that number is expected for this Saturday’s run as Rachel Alexandra’s absence will leave a void.
