Much of the Preakness Stakes betting attention will be on Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver who is also trained by Pletcher. Aikenite will try and steal the spotlight from his stablemate in Preakness Stakes odds.
Preakness Stakes odds list Aikenite as one of the longshots to win the race. His last race was a second place in the Derby Trial on April 24. He is owned by Cot Campbell’s Dogwood Stables. “After the Derby Trial, Mr. Campbell was excited about the way he ran and wanted to take a look at the Preakness,” Pletcher said.
The concern if you are taking Aikenite in Preakness Stakes odds is that he is winless since his debut race at Saratoga. He was third in the Hopeful, second in the Breeders’ Futurity, and then 5th in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile last year.
This year he was 6th in the Holy Bull, 3rd in the Fountain of Youth, 8th in the Blue Grass and then second in the Derby Trial.
Looking at his past races it is hard to make a case for Aikenite in Preakness Stakes odds. He finished behind Dublin in the Hopeful so he would have to beat that horse in this race. He was second to Nobles Promise in the Breeders’ Futurity and he might face that horse again in Preakness Stakes odds.
In the Fountain of Youth he was behind Jackson Bend and Eskendereya and in Preakness Stakes odds there is a chance he would be facing Jackson Bend again.
What may help Aikenite in Preakness Stakes wagering is his pedigree. He is by Yes It’s True and that horse has sired sprinters. Aikenite’s dam is Silverlado who is by Saint Ballado who sired Saint Liam and Ashado. The shorter distance of the Preakness should suit this horse while the Derby and the Belmont would not.
Another positive for Aikenite in Preakness Stakes betting is that other than the race against Eskendereya he has been right there in all of his races, never finishing farther than five lengths back.
Most bettors will be looking at Super Saver on Saturday, May 15th since he is the Derby winner. His stablemate Aikenite is not without a chance though although he probably doesn’t have the experience or the class to win.
